At the launch of the first series of Eee PC, which occurred in October of 2007, probably even the manufacturer Asus is expecting a resounding success as well. Yet towards the end of 2007 the number of units sold in the world exceeds 300,000.
The success of the series Eee, however, is not exclusively commercial. With the market introduction of these products Asus has actually created a small revolution, which soon forced the others to similar choices. Today virtually all major companies that produce PCs count among their offers at least one model lightweight and economical and they still do not have try to run for cover.
The commercial offer of Asus has also brought to the fore a definition which, though born a few years before, had always been rather aloof. The word netbook is now virtually in common use in computer and indicates a computer, small, lightweight and above all very economically. Certainly the computers that belong to this new family have some technical limitations and structural, but they seem quite insignificant compared to the benefits they offer.
Since computers have become commonplace, one of the main problems that have plagued the computer has always been to upgrade. Applications and operating systems that force more and more expensive to abandon hardware still in perfect working just to get a latest software. One of the most interesting aspects of the birth of the netbook is precisely with the disruption of this paradigm. Asus first, and then the other manufacturers were able to demonstrate that even a computer with relatively limited computing power can play properly with the most operations it needs the average user. Early versions of netbooks are mainly supported open source operating systems, while most of the current supply is also based on Microsoft operating systems, although not the latest generation.
In addition to the operating system, such choices were made also for applications. Promoting products or free alternatives is often possible to obtain virtually the same functionality offered by systems far more expensive.
The Idea Linux
If Windows XP is the best compromise between compatibility with Windows and applications for the system, the Linux world, traditionally voted in a better utilization of resources, has found fertile ground in these small laptops. Some manufacturers offer their netbooks already have a Linux distribution, but there are many alternative choices that can increase compatibility with the working environment or the efficiency. Among the many choices available, there are customized versions of the popular Ubuntu, or you can choose versions that are built or fill any distribution based on the characteristics of your hardware.
The output of the netbook has also influenced the plans Micorosft. In fact, after announcing the withdrawal of Windows XP from the market, which should have been done in June 2008, the Redmond company has decided to postpone the date to June 30, 2010 or one year after the release of Windows 7. This choice was dictated by netbook manufacturers to equip a Microsoft operating system with requests for system less costly than the newer Windows Vista.
