Adobe Flash Player 10.1: GPU acceleration for netbooks

By admin

Adobe unveils the first fruits of its partnership with Nvidia, and many other international partners to build the new Flash Player that can benefit from universal GPU acceleration.

Despite the comfort and convenience of mobile internet access devices in charge as netbooks, MIDs and smartphones, the limitations imposed by hardware platforms in terms of preventing them from enjoying the full benefits of web content more elaborate.

One in every case of video in Flash, activities are certainly not negligible if the analyst firm Nielsen NetView by recent polls even places it third among the most popular among internet users, followed by the use of email. At present there is a real Flash plugin for the browser smartphone devices, while the version available for PC and Mac, which is used regularly on netbooks and MIDs, entrusts much of the computational load to the CPU, a real Achilles heel of these small computers.

This state of affairs is not destined to last long. Adobe has just officially unveiled the new Flash Player 10.1, software that will be made available during the first half of next year for all platforms, from PCs to netbooks, from SmartBook to smartphones.

This new runtime designed to integrate effectively with any browser will be the first real tangible results of a wider project called “Open Screen Project, which was attended by nearly 50 of the most important international partners of hardware, software and entertainment, with the aim to allow a no-compromise web browsing and the use of high-definition content for all platforms.

As we had anticipated a few days ago, the great innovation that will allow these results is to exploit the GPU for full graphics acceleration and video feature in addition to increasing the performance and improve the experience of surfing the web will serve to diminish ‘ impact on autonomy and reduce the use of system resources.

In this respect, the partnership between Nvidia and Adobe had a central role and, although the new Flash Player is still in a preliminary stage of development, early results showed the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference held in California these days are quite surprising. Extract video that we propose is compared playing a Flash video HD with and without graphics acceleration on an HP Mini 311 with Nvidia ION.

The future of Adobe Flash Player promises among other things an unprecedented programmability and interactivity: through the support of technology and the functions of modern mobile devices such as multi-touch, the gestures, and the integration of accelerometers for detecting the orientation of the screen is in fact possible to create web-based creativity and unprecedented control.

IMG_1038As we said, the final version of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 will be released during the first months of next year, while there will be a public beta later this year for Windows Mobile, Palm webOS and other desktop operating systems like Windows, Macintosh and Linux.

Users of Google Android and Symbian OS will have to wait some months more for the public beta, which should arrive in early 2010. Finally, although there are no dates or details, official loyal BlackBerry users should not despair, because thanks to a recent collaboration between Adobe and RIM’s new Flash Player will be developed for the BlackBerry platform OS.
