[Guide] Install Windows 7 on EeePC
By
You can install the new Microsoft operating system on EeePC netbook without major problems. Currently, updates mainly seashell patterns, but in the last hours of the Asus support site is also putting drivers and bios for older models.
I found online a simple process to install on an EeePC 1005HA Seven. Nothing more than a series of recommendations on the order of installing drivers and the creation of a USB stick from which to start the installation.
The following procedure allows you to install on an EeePC 1005HA Seven and have a fully functional within a couple of hours. Windows 7 behaves very well on the 10-inch Asus, thanks to new drivers all hardware devices are recognized and the autonomy of the battery is not affected by the change of the operating system. You can follow this procedure on other than 1005HA netbook, but remember to refer to the drivers for your model.
Download Drivers
I started downloading some (not all) drivers from the Asus support site.
* Go here and select Eee Family -> Eee PC -> 1005HA -> Windows 7;
* Download the following drivers and utilities: ATK, Audio, LAN, TouchPad, Utilities -> Super Hybrid Engine, Utilities -> KB Filter Utility, Wireless and Bluetooth.
To retrieve the driver of the remaining devices I prefer to rely on the sites of various manufacturers, which provide latest versions of those proposed by Asus. These relate to the chipset, the disk controller (AHCI) and the graphics card.
* For the chipset go here;
* For the disk controller go here;
* For the graphics chip, go here.
For convenience, put all the drivers in a folder and remember their position, you will need later.
Updating the BIOS
After downloading all the drivers I’ve updated the BIOS to the latest available version (see 1102) using a 2GB USB stick formatted FAT and using the utility AFUDOS of Asus. Once inserted into the pen with the new BIOS (renamed 1005HA.ROM) into a USB port on netbooks, just hit Alt + F2 at startup and follow the onscreen instructions. The procedure is simple but also risky, if you are a beginner get help from a friend more experienced than you.
Create a USB drive for installation
The passage that follows is optional if you have an external DVD player. In this case, insert the disc into the drive, connect all’EeePC and skip the next paragraph.
Alternatively you can copy the contents of the DVD of Windows 7 on your computer, insert a USB stick (at least 8GB) formatted as FAT32, open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd), reach the folder where you copied the Seven disk and type:
bootsect.exe / nt60 f:
where f, stands for the drive letter of the USB stick that you previously entered. A message will tell you if everything went the right way. Without this, you just copy all the files in the folder that contains the DVD of Windows 7 (the directory where you put the files on disk) in the usual USB stick.
Start the installation
Make sure you have the EeePC 1005HA off and connect it to a power outlet. Insert the USB stick with the installation files of Windows 7, turn on the netbook and hold the ESC key. This will start the boot menu where you choose (which will appear in the list) your USB device. If the menu does not appear and the operating system, try again one more time.
Here’s start installing Windows 7. Select your country and start a new installation (the update is not taken into account by this guide). If you do not have in mind a particular pattern for the hard disk, formatted drives C and D exist (partitions 1 and 2 on disk0), go ahead and select the partition 1 as the primary operating system.
Install drivers
After completing the installation process, you can begin to use the drivers downloaded previously. Copy them all on a USB stick and transfer them (for convenience) in D partition of Windows 7. Install them in the following order:
Chipset
* Intel Matrix Storage Manager
* Graphics Adapter
* Hotkey Utility
* Audio
* LAN
* Touchpad
* Super Hybrid Engine
* KB Filter Utility
* Wireless
* Bluetooth
I suggest you to reboot after installing each driver, but if you have little time and you trust your instincts (!), Reboot after you complete the Driver Intel (chipsets, disk controllers and video card).
Concluding Remarks
There. If everything went the right way (the unexpected is always lurking in the computer world) enjoy your EeePC 1005HA with Windows 7. Check that everything works properly (including function keys and the Super Hybrid Engine) and proceed with the installation of software that you most like (Firefox, VLC, Chrome, Windows Live and so on).
