Product Description

Minimize the size and maximize your mobility with the stylish HP Mini 5101 (model FM955UT), HP's premier full-function business companion PC. With a 10.1-inch diagonal LED-backlit display, a 2.64-pound carry weight, and brushed aluminum finish, the HP Mini 5101 is anything but bland. And the durable all-metal case, with a magnesium base, helps protect your notebook from the rigors of work on the go.

The highly portable, business-oriented HP Mini 5101.
The HP Mini's generous, keyboard produces the typing experience the way email and IM were intended. The 95 percent full-size keyboard, plus a touchpad, offer full-sized notebook familiarity in contrast to smaller keyboards of some competing companion PCs.

It's powered by Intel's 1.6 GHz Atom N280 processor, which uses an innovative design structure and hafnium-infused circuitry that helps reduce electrical current leakage in transistors--providing longer battery life when you're on the go. A roomy 160 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) provides ample storage for all your documents and presentations. Other features include 2 GB of RAM (maximum capacity), 2-megapixel webcam, Secure Digital memory card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, Draft-N Wi-Fi networking, and up to 4.5 hours of battery life. It's pre-installed with the Windows Vista Business operating system (with downgrade to Windows XP).

Key Features

  • 10.1-inch LED backlit widescreen display (1024 x 600-pixel resolution) provides richer colors and clearer definition.
  • 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 processor combines performance and efficiency to explore the Internet and stay connected while mobile. The Atom N280 processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data). • 160 GB hard drive with 7200 RPM speed featuring HP 3D DriveGuard--a shock-resistant, hard-mount solution that reduces the transmission of shock to the hard drive by as much as 50 percent. This means that the hard drive is mounted firmly to the notebook frame so the notebook absorbs more of the impact from drops, bumps and bangs. This approach works like a car seatbelt that keeps you strapped firmly in place during an accident, while the car frame absorbs the brunt of the impact.
  • 2 GB of DDR2 RAM
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
  • 2-megapixel webcam
  • Draft-N Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g/n) for greater speed and range
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity enables you to communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones.
  • Software: Microsoft Office Ready, Corel Home Office, HP Disk Sanitizer
  • Windows Vista Business with downgrade to Windows XP Professional
  • Up to 4.5 hours of battery life with 4-cell battery

  • Warranty: one-year standard parts and labor warranty, pick-up or carry-in, and toll-free 7 x 24 hardware technical phone support. On-site service and warranty upgrades are also available.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
With its integrated Draft-N Wi-Fi networking capabilities, this laptop provides up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range using 802.11n-compatible routers as you would with 802.11g networks. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found at Wi-Fi hotspots and in older home routers) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). This notebook also provides ultra-fast Gigabit (10/100/1000) Ethernet networking.

  • Analog video output: 1 VGA

This is a perfect computer to watch movies.

I just love this little guy. My old laptop had issues with its motherboard, and I wanted to get something as a backup while it was being repaired so I bought this particular machine.

I must say I really love it. The quality of materials is excellent, and I personally feel that they are better than my dell xps laptop.

For my purposes such as internet surfing, and watching netflix movies, and talking on Skype with video it works awesome. The camera is particularly good, the microphone is good too.

Although the product says Vista Business, it actually has installed XP with a Vista update disc (which I immediately tossed- as I imagine it would be slow on this machine).

XP loads superfast and works great. I am hopeful the stripped down Windows 7 basic will work equally well when released, otherwise I'm quite happy with XP- it's stable and quick.

This laptop is so lightweight that I can just carry this little fellow everywhere with me around the house.

My wife really loves this computer to, and lately I've had some difficulty getting my hands on this guy because she wakes up before I do, and I'm stuck with my iphone or old laptop.

This is the third HP laptop/netbook I owned. It has everything I wanted for a machine that I use for e-mail and video calls on trips -- weight, size, battery life (4+ hrs), memory (2 GB), high quality sound and video, best keyboard of its class, and solidly built. I would have given it a 5-star if it were not becasue of three issues: (1) The Wi-Fi card did not work most of the time; (2) The 800 number for tech support that came with the machine was wrong. When I called the number, the person who answered the phone couldn't find the Mini 5101 in his database, even with serial number and product code provided. After an inordinate amount of time, he finally found out from someone that the Mini 5101 belongs to the "Business" and not the "Consummer" division where he was and that I should call a different number which he sucessfully connected me to (from India to China, I believe). (3) After the Wi-Fi card was repaired by sending it to Houston, Texas, now I have another problem, the power switch would not respond after the machine went into a standby/sleep mode. I couldn't wake up or turn off the machine, and has to do a dry boot (removing all power supply, including the battery and reconnect it again.) This time I used live-chat tech support and was asked to re-install the Operating System that came with a CD. But the Mini 5101, like all other netbooks, doesn't have a CD drive. Since I don't want to buy an external drive (and there is no guarantee that it'll solve the issue), I decided to avoid the problem by setting the sleep mode to "never."

I do have to say that HP has great tech support in the Business division. The tech person I talked to was patient and knowlegeable; the overnight repair service was as promised. I got my machine repaired and returned within three days, including shipping time from Los Angeles to Houston Texas, and back.
Screen Broke! Rotten Customer Service!

DO NOT BUY! This little computer was fine for two months and I raved about it to friends. Then, the screen broke. My customer service experience was so bad that I have sworn off buying ANY HP product until they improve their responses.

When the screen broke, I called customer service, which is now in India. I explained the problem with the screen and she said the problem I described could only be caused by customer misuse or damage that would not be covered by warranty. Misuse? Not a chance! I carried it in a neoprene sleeve inside a padded laptop case. She said I could send it to HP to determine if it might be an issue covered by warranty, but it would cost $89 if they gave a non-warranty diagnosis and I decided not to get it fixed. I asked the cost of a replacement screen. At $400, it was more than I paid for the entire computer! She said I could call the HP service centers in my city to ask for it to be assessed here, rather than mailing it off to HP. Since this might allow me to save some money to have it assessed without the $89 drop dead fee, I called all three service centers in my area. Unfortunately, each service center said that this netbook was a model that they were not qualified to service, so they wouldn't even look at it.

Basically, warranty means nothing to HP. They try to blame their product issues on the customer. I have since purchased a netbook from a different company, which has been more reliable, so far.
